8/16bit greyscale and 24/32bit color PNG codec for VFW

I wrote a VideoForWindows (vfw) codec, compressing/decompressing to/from
PNG. For 8/16 bit greyscale and 24/32 bit Color Images. The codec works
fine for Color, but not for greyscale. An avi is written, looks good
inside a binary Editor, but doesn't open in Windows Media Player, and not
with AVIFileOpen. Even if AVI is an old standard, it is supported by
DirectShow, so still useable.
Are there any problems with 8bit Grey inside an AVI file?

To install the codec, just right-click on the INF file and call Install in
Windows Explorer.
